SAMPLE LETTER TO ELECTED OFFICIALS FOR SECTION 8 TENANTS

Dear ___________:

I am a tenant in Section 8 housing and I am writing to ask for your help. My rent has been increased by $_______this year by the Housing Authority. I am on a fixed income (am a senior, disabled, etc) and earn $____and cannot possibly afford this amount. There are very few housing options that I can afford in San Francisco, yet I am afraid I will be forced to move or risk being evicted because I cannot pay the rent.

For Congressmember:
I urge you to do what you can to increase funding for HUD, especially the Section 8 program in next year's budget process.
Please help fight the funding cuts in Washington that will force me to leave my home.
Help ensure that HUD's Fair Market Rents are really "fair" so that I can pay my rent.

For Local Officeholders:
Please do what you can do keep my home affordable by helping to fund my rent, assisting me to find new affordable housing, urging my landlord to lower the rent or any other solutions you may have.

I have lived in the _________(neighborhood) of San Francisco for ____years. My children attend ______school. This is my home and I do not want to leave my family and friends or become homeless.

Thank you for listening to my concerns.

I can be reached at (___)___________:

Sincerely,
